Initial settlements in the Bergisches Land date back to the Neolithic period; the Neander Valley, once a gorge in the area of today’s towns of Erkrath and Mettmann, gained international fame when the first historically documented remains of the extinct human species Neanderthal were discovered there in 1856. However, consistent settlement of the Bergisches Land only began in the 8th and 9th centuries. After the Seven Years’ War at the end of the 18th century, industrial expansion began, leading the region—particularly the area near the River Wupper—to become the largest economic centre of the German Empire. This economic prosperity came to an abrupt end with the First World War. After the war, Elberfeld, Barmen and several other municipalities merged to form the city of Wuppertal. Following the Second World War, the Bergisches Land regained industrial momentum, particularly in textile production and processing; later—and in some cases still today—the chemical, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering industries, as well as the service sector, have shaped the regional economy.
